Sustainability
Our respect for timeless handcrafted furniture is matched only by our dedication to circular economy principles. By transforming reclaimed teak into furniture we close the circle on waste and help protect ancient forests and the fragile ecosystems they shelter for generations yet to come.
Sustainability
At Studio Botanica, we craft exquisite, one-of-a-kind furniture using aged reclaimed teak (Tectona grandis). We source and procure our timber primarily from Maharashtra, where it has been salvaged from demolished buildings, vessels, and infrastructure—often dating back to the 1930s–1950s that have made way for modern buildings in densely populated Mumbai as it grows skywards. This exceptional wood, now 70–90 years old or more, carries a rich history revealed in its grain: perfectly imperfect marks of time that add unique character to every piece.
Sustainability at Our Core
Sustainability forms a core part of our approach. By repurposing this already-harvested timber, we help keep material out of landfills, reduce demand for newly logged wood, and support a more circular use of resources. Reclaimed teak like ours avoids contributing to current deforestation pressures, as the original extraction and environmental harm occurred decades ago.
A Commitment to Responsible Material Use
Reclaimed teak combines exceptional durability, natural beauty, and a lower environmental impact than that of freshly harvested alternatives often used by our competitors. The dense grain and high natural oil content—enhanced by decades of aging—make it highly resistant to rot, insects, and weathering. The result is sturdy furniture built to last generations. And with that, this longevity reduces the need for replacements over time, reduces demand for fast furniture, and helps minimize long-term waste.
In addition, we partner with trusted salvage networks in Maharashtra and beyond to source only documented, aged teak from verified demolitions – never freshly milled. We prioritize supply chain transparency and continue strengthening origin verification as we prepare for our 2026 B Corp Certification.
Many of our customers share our appreciation for these principles, valuing pieces that honor both craftsmanship and mindful resource use.
Preserving History While Embracing a Circular Approach
Each piece from our aged reclaimed teak carries a quiet, enduring story. From ancient forests where it first stood as a beautiful (Tectona grandis) tree, it was sadly logged, yet transformed into a durable material, reinforcing colonial ceilings, bearing the weight of India's railways as sleepers, weathering the seas on maritime vessels transporting cargo, and gracing walls and floors of residences. Today, it has a renewed life in your home. These natural imperfections, rich grains, and evolving patina are not flaws; they are authentic marks of time, lending unmatched depth and character that no new wood could or should consciously attempt to replicate.
By giving this material a second life, we contribute to waste reduction and responsible resource management. Our process aligns with circular economy ideas: reusing what already exists rather than extracting more.
Our Dedication
At Studio Botanica, we are dedicated to creating beautiful, durable furniture that respects the environment and celebrates skilled craftsmanship. Using aged reclaimed teak reflects our commitment to quality over quantity—and our ongoing effort to make thoughtful choices in how we source and create.
With every piece in our collection, we aim to inspire appreciation for heritage materials and more conscious approaches to design and consumption.
